He’s well-dressed and energetic, his smile is contagious. He blasts music out of his trumpet up and down Pearl Street Mall all summer, even in the midday heat.
Master Blaster G, otherwise known as Gabriel Angelo, is making a name for himself across the nation performing songs on his trumpet. The 18-year-old was born in Oakland, Calif., and began his career at the age of 10 as a street performer in San Francisco. His local fan-base grew quickly and over social media, he said, and he gained the attention of Ellen DeGeneres. Soon after, DeGeneres had Angelo on her TV show in 2012.
“You’re just such an old soul, it’s amazing,” DeGeneres said in their interview. “Your energy, your personality, everything.”
Now, he’s taken his talent to Boulder, where the love of his life lives, he said. He moved to the area last year.
At 6 years old, Master Blaster G discovered his musical passion. In school, he was sent to the band room to pick out an instrument for class. In front of him was a beautiful, brass trumpet. “It was love at first sight,” he said.
After honing his craft with the guidance of his school maestro, Angelo built up enough courage to set out on the streets and play the trumpet for passersby. It was Angelo’s belief in himself and his insistence on independence that gained him such fame, he said.
“I didn’t want anyone to own me,” he said.
With this freedom, Angelo moved from San Francisco to New York to begin recording his debut album. He sings and dances, too. While his album is still in the works, Angelo is also taking online classes, working toward bachelor’s degrees in business and philosophy. “My goal is to show people true love and life,” he said. “I love performing for people. I want to help them forget their problems, and to understand that they can overcome their problems and feel true joy.”
