Mercer Martin’s parents, Kristin and Keith Martin, hold a family portrait in their yard in Greenville. Their daughters, Holly, left, and Naomi, are with them.

A senior at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., Mercer and 14 fellow cadets have gained national attention for their singing group, In the Stairwell. Competing with other entertainers in the TV show “America’s Got Talent,” they’ve climbed through the ranks and are vying with a dozen other acts to go further in the contest.

They will appear live on the next show, which starts 8 p.m. Tuesday on NBC.

In addition to true talent, the group has distinguished itself by singing a cappella – which means no musical instruments are playing in the background.

Getting to this level hasn’t been easy. The group has been in Los Angeles for more than a week feverishly practicing.
