The Duncan Lady Demons volleyball team lost their first contest of the season, falling to Ampo 1-3.
The Lady Demons lost a close first set, 25-23, took the second set 25-20 and lost the final two sets 25-17 and 25-21.
Errors hurt Duncan in each set, but it’s an area Duncan Head Volleyball Coach Amanda Lard said they can correct.
“We had too many serve errors throughout the night,” Lard said. “The first game we lost 23-25 we had seven serve errors. The last game we lost 21-25 and we had 12 errors with hitting and serving combined. It’s things like that where we shot ourselves in the foot a little bit throughout the night. We can fix those things, so next time when we play them, hopefully we have adjusted and fixed some of those things we didn’t do very well.”
Despite the loss, Lard was pleased with the defensive effort in the second set of the match.
“It took us a little while to get going,” Lard said. “In the second game, just looking at the stat sheet it was amazing. It might be the best I’ve seen us play in years. They were covering the floor, they were getting to the ball, they were playing great defense and it showed up in the stat column.”
The Lady Demons emphasized defensive efficiency heading into the season.
The team hopes to use their size to their advantage, while keeping position to limit defensive breakdowns.
As a whole, Lard is hoping to see more consistency as the season progresses.
“We might not always get the best pass, we might not always get the best set or the best hit, so we have to have our defense step up,” Lard said. “If we aren’t scoring points consistently then we have to be preventing the other team from scoring. For sure our defense has to improve overall, it has to be more consistent. I saw spurts of greatness. Like I said that second game was…
